The details in financial planning will differ greatly depending on your age. If you are younger, the financial planning that you will do will be a lot different than what you will do once you reach your 40s and older. Financial planning becomes more and more important as you get older and into your 40s… and more importantly, as you get closer to retirement.
If you’re in your 40s you might only have 10-20 years left until you retire, so it is important to make that time count.
Hopefully by this time you have a nice retirement nest egg already, and you can just keep adding to that. If you do, compound interest should start to be doing wonders for you and making things grow nicely. Your investments might have been working for you for possibly up to 20 years, and that’s a great thing. Don’t touch any of this money, and just continue to let it be.
If you haven’t started or got a really late start to your retirement saving, it’s not time to panic. The clock is against you a little bit, but there are still a lot of things you can do to put you in a great position. If you have a 401(k) at work, you need to be contributing as much as possible. At the MINIMUM, you should contribute enough to get the employer match. If not, you’re basically throwing away money, and that is something you cannot afford to do at this point.
If you are contributing to the 401(k), you might also want to look into a Roth IRA. If it’s late in the game and you don’t have a lot of retirement savings, you should be trying to do all that you can, and this can be a big help. You need to make up for lost time, and the only way to do that is to save more money and let it work for you.
If you’re in your 40s, financial planning becomes more important than ever. Retirement isn’t right on the horizon, but it’s at least in sight. With that in mind, you either need to start saving or (hopefully) continue saving. That will put you into a good position in your 50s, 60s, and the rest of your life. You still have a lot of time to make changes that will help you later in your life, but you should get started as soon as you can.
